Devoted fans of all sports are easily identified. They are the ones that proudly display their favorite teams on car tags, bumper stickers, window flags and they even might be identified by the emblems on their clothing. They are also the ones that can recite team facts and statistics at the drop of a hat. These fans remain loyal to their teams through the good as well as the not-so-good seasons. They are stable in their support.
Can the same be said about us as Christians? Only when our lives exhibit the stability of staying focused on Jesus can we hope to bear the fruit necessary to have such a witness.

Can people inside or outside of the church walls know that you are what you claim to be just by observing your life example not only in the good times but also in the not-so-good times? (James 1:2-3)

One of the most successful and well-known college football coaches, Bear Bryant, strongly believed in the basics. It is told that one of the keys of his success was that during spring practice he emphasized nothing but the basics of the game, (ball handling skills, running, tackling, etc) even though they had been playing football since an early age.
In The Simple Church, the authors, through in-depth research, found that the churches that were growing and successful in their ministry were churches that had returned back to the basics in the direction of their ministry through three steps. First, they bring people in by teaching them to love God through worship services. Second, members are encouraged to be discipled through small groups (Sunday School). Third, members are encouraged to minister to others, (outreach).

One of Jesus’ last instructions to his disciples was to simply go forth and make disciples. When was the last time we as individual Christians have made the effort to disciple a new believer?

One of the main objectives of football squads on both sides of the football is to isolate and separate opposing players in order to take away the effectiveness of the opposing team as a unified group. By isolating defensive players the offense has a greater chance of gaining valuable yardage and even scoring. Likewise, by breaking down the unity of the offensive line the defense has a better opportunity to disrupt the play for a loss of yardage.
In the same manner Satan tries to do the same to individual Christians and to churches to render them ineffective in their ministry or witness. Only by being united in the Lord can a group of believers expect to have a winning church by increasing God’s kingdom.

Are we as a family of believers maintaining a strong impenetrable line of defense against the wiles of Satan in his attempts to divide us and destroy unity?

Read 2 Thessalonians 3:1-5 and Colossians 2:5

Imagine you have climbed a tall mountain, but just before you reach the summit there is a deep ravine! There you have two poles. Both are one foot wide. Now, you have to cross that deep ravine and you can use either pole. Here is the catch, one is round, and long enough to cross here, and the other is square, but you need to walk a while with someone who knows where to find a place to cross…. Which pole do you want to use?
The round pole may get you there sooner, but it would be much tougher and more frightening, and well, the risk….. Moving left and right, trying to keep in the exact middle…. We can fight all the way up the hill to the ravine, but if we aren’t stable when we cross it, well it is a long fall! What of the square pole, it may take more perseverance, but the stability to cross the ravine just might be worth it!
The same can be said of a team on the field, working their way to that championship, then, wham, the quarterback is injured! Do we have a guy who is less experienced try to throw a touchdown pass on the next down, or what about slowly moving our way to the goal line little by little? The latter a little more stable, perhaps?
So, how do we become stable?
“But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.” 2 Thessalonians 3:3
“For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.” Colossians 2:5
The ravines will come, we have to use the stable way across it! Our Lord, and our faith in Him IS that STABILITY! We can work hard and do well, but unless we keep our faith in Jesus Christ, remain in the stability of His word, for the duration of our journey we are merely using the “round pole!”

“The one man team is a complete and total myth.” – Don Shula
Ever hear the words, “united we stand, divided we fall”? Such a powerful truth. Ask any football quarterback who the most important player to him is when he first gets his hands on the ball. He knows that his protection is his linemen. They protect him as he gets the ball to his receiver. NO ONE MAN can win on the football field! It takes a team, but not only a team, a UNIFIED team. They are all working together, doing their individual part and using their own talents for the good of the team!
Divide and Conquer. There is a reason behind this idea. If you divide a team, or an army, you destroy the unity. It would be hard to win a football game with no linemen on your team, and a battle would be a sure defeat if your soldiers were cut off from those who supplied them. WE MUST BE UNITED!
“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:11-13)

Simply stated, we have the all-knowing, all-powerful, one and only God who stands for us and before us! If we are true followers of Christ, how can we expect anything but VICTORY! We are promised that if we believe Jesus is who he is, we are victors over the world. We, not the enemy are the ONLY ones who can defeat US.
“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” (1 John 5:4-5)
God prepares us for victory! We have only to realize that we are already victorious, being “warriors” for our Lord!
“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57)

Read Psalm 78:1-7

This scripture focuses on the importance of Bible study. It reinforces the command given in Deuteronomy 6 to teach our children the bible so that generations to follow will be believers of the Word. Bible study within the family unit is vital for sustaining Christian homes and achieving Christian growth. However, Sunday School also needs to be an essential part of your Christian growth. If you want a church to grow numerically and spiritually, it must begin in Sunday School. Bill and I have been personal witnesses to this.
In 1995, we were asked to teach the Singles/ Young Married Class at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. This class was combined because of low numbers—in fact they had not been coming to Sunday School at all. Prior to the first Sunday of the church year, we made contact with each person on roll. When we got to class at 9:45 a.m. on that Sunday – no one was there! By 10:00 a.m., I left the room to go to the bathroom and cry about it! When I returned to the room minutes later, we had 4 singles and 1 married couple sitting there waiting for a Sunday School lesson which we delivered with the Lord’s help. On that Sunday, Bill and I made a commitment to them, and they to us, that we would do outreach to grow this class. We started out with Saturday morning breakfasts at our house and then we would visit prospects. The class began to slowly grow. Seven years later, that small class had subdivided into 3 separate classes. During these growing years, it was not unusual to have 35-40 in our class. The Lord truly blessed our efforts; our numbers grew – BUT – our members had children which meant the children’s classes also grew. When we left Liberty Hill, that class had generated eight deacons and several Sunday School teachers.
Why did this class grow? All because of the Lord’s blessing. We also had a great love for each other, developed prayed over and prepared lessons, did ministry when there was a need, held quarterly socials, and went on numerous outings.

As a class, we were united and worked as a team. Can you see how God can use unity and teamwork to make a Sunday School class grow?

Revival -- Humility

Read Luke 18:9-14

In Psalm 9, the Psalmist says that “He forgetteth not the cry of the humble.” In our society, it seems that humility is nowhere to be found. We’ve become a proud and arrogant people. Climbing the ladder of success has become the most important thing in some lives. Jesus taught about being a servant. He washed the disciples’ feet as an illustration. Jesus let them know that He came to serve and not to be served.
Isaiah 57:15 reveals God’s values “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with Him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and revive the heart of the contrite ones.” Jesus says in Matthew 18:4: “Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

Think of the revival that would come to PVBC if the hundreds here would be of one heart, praying in one accord. Act 4:32: “And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common.”
Read the following passages that instruct us on how to enjoy oneness of heart: Isaiah 52:8, Philippians 1:27 & 3:16, I Corinthians 12:12, Ephesians 4:31-32. Try these to enhance your prayer life.

Faith: the trust in God and in His promises as made through Christ and the Scriptures by which man is justified and saved. (Random House Dictionary). Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Praying is praising and thanking God. It is also petitioning God for certain things in our lives. Praying without faith is just words. In Matthew 21:22 Jesus says “All things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” The key word is believing.
Praying for revival in our lives and for salvation for the lost must be done in faith without any doubt. Prayer, with faith, triggers the promises of God. His power is always available and is activated when we pray. We are praying to a God with no limits on what He can do. Read Ephesians 3:20. Revival is not God’s problem. The problem is in our thinking and obeying “with faith” that God will answer our request. Prayers can never deplete God’s power and grace. Our lack of faith hinders our prayers.

God allows difficulties in our lives. They may not be as harsh as Job’s. Praying and depending on God during these times will strengthen our faith and dependence on Him. There was a time when my wife and I went through a very difficult time. She was diagnosed with cancer. We were devastated. Not knowing the severity, we were scared beyond belief. Our faith in God and a simple prayer to ask God to help us eased our fear. God answered that simple prayer. My wife is cancer free and we believe God will not allow it to return. My praise and gratitude cannot be expressed in words. Read Phil 4:4 and I Thes 5:18. If your prayer is to have any effect, then it must come from a thankful heart.

Reverence: a feeling or attitude of deep respect tinged with awe, to honor and adore. (Random House Dictionary). Praying to the God that can speak things into existence, controls history and our lives, demands our reverence. God is holy. He is not the old man upstairs. Psalm 99 commands us to praise, exalt and worship the Lord. Why? Because the “Lord God is King.”
Picture in your mind being ushered into the presence of God. Do you see yourself sashaying before Him with worldly things on your mind? I’m sure that’s not the case. Your attitude in that day will guide your spirit today. If an attitude of reverence prevails, then let that attitude guide you in your daily prayers as you come to the throne of your heavenly Father, the Lord God Almighty.

Picture in your mind being ushered into the presence of God. Do you see yourself sashaying before Him with worldly things on your mind? I’m sure that’s not the case. Your attitude in that day will guide your spirit today. If an attitude of reverence prevails, then let that attitude guide you in your daily prayers as you come to the throne of your heavenly Father, the Lord God Almighty.

Obedience: the act or practice of obeying; dutiful or submissive compliance-conformity to a monastic rule of the authority to a religious superior. (Random House Dictionary). Living an obedient Christian life is much more than adhering to traditions or to the by-laws of a church. Isaiah makes it plain that God does not want our Sunday worship only. He desires our worship and obedience daily, hourly, every minute. Read John 9:31b and Psalm 34:14. For our prayers to reach above the ceiling, we must be obedient to God every minute of every day.

As our church prepared for revival, there were several cottage prayer meetings. These meeting were great, but unless we as individuals prepare our hearts, there will be no revival. As Christians, it is our responsibility to stay close to God. Through prayer and constant confession, we can do this. A burdened heart begins with self cleansing, confessing our sins daily. Only then can we confidently pray for others and experience revival.

Fanny Crosby the author of this hymn, began memorizing scripture as a child. With the help of her grandmother and later a neighbor, she committed most of the Bible to memory. It was out of this deep reservoir of scripture memory that she was able to write so many lasting hymns.
It was her understanding of scripture that allowed her to vision closeness with her Savior as a deep abiding friendship.

Would He devote that sacred head for sinners such as I?
Was it for sins that I have done He suffered on the tree?
Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree!
But drops of grief can ne’er repay the debt of love I owe;
Here, Lord I give myself away – ‘tis all that I can do
As we live our daily lives our actions affect the lives of those we come in contact with every day. It is a sobering thought to realize that we impact people often times without even knowing it. I am sure that when Isaac Watts penned the words to this hymn he never thought about the millions that would be impacted by his words over the course of 3 centuries. Can you imagine having an impact on people 300 years from now?
A thirty year old blind woman attending a revival service in 1851, heard the words to this song and gave her life to the Lord. Her name was Fanny Crosby, who went on to become the greatest hymn writer of her time. Many of her songs are impacting lives today.

As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it Jesus is my plea,
Daily, walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
The story goes about a father leaving home on a long trip. The father wrote his son a note saying: “I will be away on your birthday, but will be home by Saturday with your gift. What would you like – a video game, new bike, or MP3 player? What did the boy circle? Saturday, he could have chosen any gift, but the gift he wanted most was time with dad.
The heart of the song, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” is that we pray to know and walk closely with our Heavenly Father. It is good to know that He is not an absent Father. He wants to share our burden and guide us daily in our walk with Him.

Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known;
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare,
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
William Walford, the author of this hymn, was a blind preacher and shopkeeper in England. One day when a local minister stopped in his store, William asked the minister to write out a new poem that he had in his head. Three years later on a visit to the United States that minister shared the poem with a newspaper editor allowing the poem to become the hymn that has been sung for over 150 years.
It is amazing what God can do with the little things of life to spread His word. Being in the right place at the right time is never by accident. We serve a sovereign God. The minister who brought the poem to America, the newspaper editor and even the author are long gone and forgotten, but the words live on. Today’s scripture reminds us to always be alert and open to the prodding of the Lord who answers prayer.

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!
What a truth is found in the words of this old hymn based on the above scripture. How often do we try to do things on our own? God is waiting for us to realize that we cannot bear our burdens alone. God is waiting for us to admit the obvious to Him: that we cannot live our lives apart from Him. Life is so much easier when we take everything to Him.
This hymn was written by Joseph Scriven, who lived his life depending on Jesus as his only friend. Scriven lived a life filled with tragedy. The night before he was to be married, his fiancé was killed in an accidental drowning.
This hymn was not written to be published, it was written to encourage his mother who was critically ill in another country. He wrote it to encourage her and remind her that Jesus was there to bear her burdens. I pray that we all win with this truth.

Often times I hear people say, “I’m just too busy for this or for that.” I have said it many times myself. But I wonder how many times we miss the prompting of God in our lives because we fill our time with something good instead of something that is better.
Are we too busy to pray? I hope not. This old hymn written by Clara Scott in the late 1800’s, calls us to take the time to stop and listen to what God has for us and then to act on it. Clara was a music teacher and composer. Her life as a teacher and composer gives us evidence that she was open to God’s leading and was ready to share through her music what God had done for her.

Jesus mentions two kinds of people in His prayer: the “wise” - arrogant in their own knowledge and the “babe” - humbly open to receive the truth of God’s word.
We all keep ourselves busy! In fact we think it’s a contest to see who can stay the busiest. It’s like we are not important or valuable without having “stuff” going on. But Matthew 11: 28 tells us “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
We don’t have to keep up with the world because Jesus freed us from sin and the bondage of proving our worth. All He wants is for us to allow Him to have full control in forming us into His image.

Peter and the apostles were faithfully teaching and preaching in the name of Jesus. God was allowing the Gospel to spread and the number of those who believed on the name of Jesus grew. This raised the ire of the Chief Priest and those that stood with him. They were angered with jealousy and plotted to kill the apostles. The Lord used a nonbeliever to deliver the apostles from an untimely death. The apostles were beaten, commanded to never again speak the name of Jesus and released. Instead of feeling sorry for themselves and their situation, the apostles rejoiced that the Lord God found them faithful and worthy to suffer pain and abuse for the Holy name of Jesus. They boldly continued to daily preach not only in the temple but in every house that Jesus is the Christ.
What could the apostles and other followers of Jesus have learned through this time of persecution? Preaching on the name of Jesus landed the apostles in this situation. Faith and trust in Jesus got them out.
Do you boldly proclaim the gospel of Jesus daily in a sinful world?
Does the world see Jesus in you?

This raised the ire of the Chief Priest and those that stood with him. They were angered with jealousy and plotted to kill the apostles. The Lord used a nonbeliever to deliver the apostles from an untimely death. The apostles were beaten, commanded to never again speak the name of Jesus and released. Instead of feeling sorry for themselves and their situation, the apostles rejoiced that the Lord God found them faithful and worthy to suffer pain and abuse for the Holy name of Jesus. They boldly continued to daily preach not only in the temple but in every house that Jesus is the Christ.
What could the apostles and other followers of Jesus have learned through this time of persecution? Preaching on the name of Jesus landed the apostles in this situation. Faith and trust in Jesus got them out.
Their faith did not decrease and their witness increased. Consider the following:
- No man can stop us from proclaiming the gospel.
- No one stops the spread of the gospel, not even in places where Christians are being persecuted and killed.
- Persecution exposes the imposter in the church and causes them to cut and run.
- We should never be ashamed of proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The word Persevere comes from the Latin word, per, meaning through, and severus, meaning severe. Therefore this means to go through something severe. Webster’s 9th Edition Collegiate Dictionary defines persevere as (1a)to persist in a state, enterprise. Synonyms: Steadfastness.
Perseverance: the action or condition or an instance of persevering.
Steadfastness:
(1a) firmly fixed in place,
(1b) not subject to change
(2) firm in belief, determination to the task.
Applying the Truth as an Individual
After reading the passages, does God expect us to persevere in our faith? Did Jesus persevere for our sakes on the cross and should we not do the same for him in our lives as his followers? Can we have misplaced perseverance in our lives? If yes, can you give some examples? Is my faith and trust in God strong enough to persevere through whatever challenges this life may throw at me and my family?
The last question is easily answered in the affirmative, but harder to live when you experience sudden loss and must put to practice the faith we have read about. However, if we are firmly grounded in our faith in Christ as our Savior, truly believe that God is our heavenly Father, and trust in His will; then we can endure much more than we might believe and still live our lives for Christ.

Are you willing to persevere many of the interpersonal differences between other members of our church? Do the areas that you demonstrate perseverance in your church life line up with the areas that God desires for your perseverance to be demonstrated? Do trials and difficulties develop perseverance in us as God’s people? Can you think of some examples in the life of our church that developed perseverance in our group of believers? Can you think of a time when you wanted to leave the congregation or fellowship? If yes, why didn’t you? Do you believe that God was using that time to develop perseverance in your life? God gives us many examples of perseverance in his word: Job, Elijah, Noah, Moses, David, all of the apostles; the list goes on and on. The trials these men went through were not easy, but think of the impact that they made on God’s plan for mankind and the Christian faith. We cannot do great things for God’s kingdom without trials, struggles, and the resulting perseverance that can come from God’s hand in our lives.

The spirit of adversity can rise up at any time and in all situations. King David had his share and more of being in adverse conditions. The utmost thing we should remember during these times of trial is that we are not alone! Glory!! The God who saved us will gladly continue to be the strong defender of our hearts, minds, and bodies. He is faithful and we should be too. Our prayer time and Word studies must continue or perhaps go into overdrive. We must have the firm foundation that will sustain us and keep us full of the knowledge of God.
David was not looking for the adversities that came on him. His young spirit was fresh and committed to serving God and others. He stumbled at times, but he was always quick to repent and get back on the road that kept him focused on being “the man after God’s own heart”. David knew how to fight. He was fearless. He was faithful to the God he loved. We who have accepted Jesus are on a winning team. Yes! Our fight should not be with our teammates. Keep praying, speaking, and singing the Word. We are winners!
Adversity can grow you -- begin a deeper desire of the Word, and elevate your prayer time.

In this letter, Paul is trying to encourage Timothy to continue sharing God’s word unashamedly, even in the midst of strong opposition. Satan will not fail to pull out all his forces when a follower of Christ is making advances, but it will serve us well to maintain a focus for the future as Paul did. God’s word is ultimate truth, and in that alone we can believe and be convinced of His promises of eternity when we devote ourselves to drawing others to Him. He is more than worthy of our absolute obedience!
Through the Holy Spirit, believers are equipped for the journey with:
- Power or strength in difficult circumstances or situations.
- Love to display to all.
- A Sound Mind to understand how to use spiritual gifts for His greater glory.

I am a pharmacy manager. Over the past three years, we have had a lot of turnover for various reasons. I began to think that people didn’t want to work with me. As I examined myself, fear set in. It started out small and gradually grew until it consumed me. I couldn’t sleep at night. I spent my off days constantly worrying about the pharmacy. I couldn’t even enjoy spending time with my family. I began praying for God to take it away, to help me, and to fix it. I trusted God and I believed He would do it. But things didn’t change. I began to wonder if I really did trust God and believe He could do it.
Shortly after this, I heard a message from my pastor. There were two chairs on the stage. They represented demonic reasoning and divine revelation. He sat in one chair and said that in this chair you would experience many bad things. When he named fear, I really tuned in. He quoted today’s Bible verse. He then moved to the other chair and said that in this chair you would experience many good things. He said: “Fear not! Jesus is Lord!” The Holy Spirit directed me to 1 John 4:18. Perfect love drives out fear. Suddenly, it all became clear. I had a pride issue. I believed that the pharmacy couldn’t function without me. My pride was feeding my fear. I got out of the demonic reasoning chair, repented of my sinful pride, and sat down in the divine revelation chair. I began to really believe 2 Timothy 1:7 for the first time in my life.

My son Justin used to love The Veggie Tales video series when he was younger. One day, he was watching an episode titled “Sumo of the Opera: A Lesson in Perseverance”. He was two at the time. Later that week, he became frustrated with something he was doing and said he was going to quit. I borrowed a line from the Veggies and said: “Perseverance, Justin, perseverance!” Justin didn’t care for that too much but he stuck it out and finished the task and he was happy that he did.
Fast forward one year. I was working hard trying to put together a tricycle for Justin. I could not get the front wheel on straight. I kept working at it while Justin was playing with his toys. It would not stay straight no matter what I did. I remember getting angry and yelling “I give up!” as I threw my wrench across the yard. Then I felt little eyes on me. Justin had stopped playing and was staring at me. He said: “Perseverance, Daddy, perseverance!” Well, the Holy Spirit convicted me and I retrieved my wrench and kept working on that tricycle wheel until it was “almost” straight. To this day, when I feel like giving up, I remember those words and it helps me hang in there and finish.

Mark Richt, head football coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, said that if the team executes, they will win. The Dawgs have everything they need to win. The coaches prepare the game plan. Each player has a playbook. The team has practice all week. On game day, if every player executes the plays, Georgia wins.
As Christians, we can win. We have everything we need. God is our coach. He’s given us the game plan in the playbook, the Bible. How do we execute the plays? Today’s Bible verse holds the answer. Obedience. We have heard the Word. We must obey it. Do what It says. I Cor 12:31 tells us that God will show us a more excellent way. Execution of the Word, obedience, will lead us to excellence for the glory of God.

I do my quiet time every morning. A few years ago, I began to feel like I wasn’t getting enough out of my Bible study. I was missing something. I began to pray and God revealed to me that I was just going through the motions so I could check quiet time off my daily list. After all, I am a deacon and a Sunday School teacher.
I realized I had no passion for God’s Word. I began to really seek Him in the mornings. God began to reveal truth to me that I didn’t hear before. My prayers began to have power. I began to pray without ceasing throughout the day. It has made a difference in my life. I developed a hunger for the Word and a thirst for Christ’s righteousness that I had not had before. I decided that I didn’t want to spend one more day going through the motions. I want to live each day with God’s all-consuming passion inside of me. What about you?

Pastor Vodie Baucham said: “If you don’t know the purpose of a thing, you’ll abuse it.” So, we need to know the purpose of this life so we won’t abuse it. In the movie Facing the Giants, the coach asks the team: “What are we doing?” Basically, he was asking: “What’s our purpose?” Webster’s Dictionary defines purpose as: a result which it is desired to obtain; willpower.
The coach of a football team knows that it takes sacrifice to win. So, the purpose of that team should be based on sacrifice. Webster’s Dictionary defines sacrifice as: the act of depriving oneself of something for the sake of attaining some goal or for the sake of someone else. That means hard work, time, physical exertion, and self-sacrifice must happen if the team wants to win.
The Church’s purpose is also based on sacrifice. Jesus Christ gave His life. He died for us, but ultimately for God’s glory. That means hard work, time, physical exertion, and self-sacrifice must happen if the Church wants to win. It’s not going to be easy. But, if it’s hard, it becomes valuable to you. If you sacrifice and work hard for something, then it means something to you. Our purpose must be more than just winning. It must be based on the sacrifice of Christ and bring glory and honor to the Father.

Paul urged Timothy to remind the believers not to argue over unimportant details or have foolish discussions. Such arguments are confusing and useless.
“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” II Timothy 2:15
What he’s saying is we need to decide whether or not we will live for God, and then live out what we have decided.

Is our church living for God, or have we been neglecting Him?

The word Passion comes from the Latin word passio meaning "suffering," "being acted upon." Webster’s 9th Edition Collegiate Dictionary defines passion as (1a) the sufferings of Christ between the night of the Last Supper and His death. Synonyms: fervor, ardor, enthusiasm, zeal.
Passion applies to an emotion this is deeply stirring or ungovernable. Fervor implies a warm and steady emotion. Ardor suggests warm and excited feeling likely to be fitful or short-lived. Enthusiasm applies to lively or eager interest in or admiration for a proposal or cause. Zeal implies energetic and unflagging pursuit of an aim or devotion to a cause.
What is unflagging? A word used in the English language since 1715, it is defined as "tireless." When I went to find verses with an example of having a passion to win, the word zeal or zealous is what I found in reference to overcoming or winning.

After reading the passage, does God show Zeal?
Who does He show zeal toward?
Can we have Zeal for the wrong things?
Do I have Zeal, tireless energy, for the things of God or for the World?
The last question should always be asked first. All of us are given the same amount of time in a day. Where we spend our time reviles the spiritual condition of the heart. Ask God to help you change in order to grow.

God doesn’t need us to get the job done, but rather we need God to use us to give us purpose. Stop robbing God and yourself! As Malachi 3:10a says, “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and try me now in this, says the Lord, if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.”

The word Passion comes from the Latin word passio meaning "suffering," "being acted upon." Webster’s 9th Edition Collegiate Dictionary defines passion as (1a) the sufferings of Christ between the night of the Last Supper and His death. Synonyms: fervor, ardor, enthusiasm, zeal.
Passion applies to an emotion this is deeply stirring or ungovernable. Fervor implies a warm and steady emotion. Ardor suggests warm and excited feeling likely to be fitful or short-lived. Enthusiasm applies to lively or eager interest in or admiration for a proposal or cause. Zeal implies energetic and unflagging pursuit of an aim or devotion to a cause.
What is unflagging? A word used in the English language since 1715, it is defined as "tireless." When I went to find verses with an example of having a passion to win, the word zeal or zealous is what I found in reference to overcoming or winning.

After reading the passage, does God show Zeal?
Who does He show zeal toward?
Can we have Zeal for the wrong things?
Do I have Zeal, tireless energy, for the things of God or for the World?
The last question should always be asked first. All of us are given the same amount of time in a day. Where we spend our time reviles the spiritual condition of the heart. Ask God to help you change in order to grow.

Back in 2006, I had my first opportunity to coach football for Brantley County High School. For the first time in the school’s 35-plus years of varsity football, we made the state playoffs. Of course, I jokingly tell everyone it was my coaching prowess that led us to the playoffs, but I know it required a lot of hard work by the entire team. As we traveled to Louisville, Georgia to face Jefferson County High School in the first round, you could sense the nervous excitement in the younger players. However, the upperclassmen knew what was required of them, and they had been preparing for this moment their entire high school careers.
Very similar to the Midianites, the Jefferson County team was viewed as the sure victor. The Lord had delivered the Israelites into the hands of the Midianites for seven years. As I walked the field during pre-game festivities, our opponent seemed without number (Judges 6 v. 5). They were also much bigger and faster than our players. However, the Jefferson County team lacked a few characteristics of a well prepared team.
Just like Gideon and the chosen 300 men, our young Brantley County team had come to understand the importance of preparation. There was a specific plan in place that we as coaches knew we had to implement in order for us to be successful against a much superior opponent (and WE won)!! I am sure Gideon was concerned when the Lord continually told him to reduce the number of Israelites who would fight the Midianites. However, the Lord had a specific plan for Gideon and the Israelites. Since the Lord was directing His people and His servant obeyed, the Spirit-led preparation produced a victory.

Do you sometimes struggle over the decisions you are called upon to make? Daily, you must make decisions about such things as your family, your finances, your job, even your church activities. Our mind can get overloaded with all the different demands in our life that call for some sort of response from us.
Well, according to this passage, God doesn’t want us to go through all of this alone. He wants to be a vital part of our decision making process. In fact, verse 5 says that we are to trust Him with our whole heart and not depend on our own understanding of a particular situation; and verse 6 promises that He will direct us. Yes, God wants to be included when you make decisions about which car you buy, what babysitter to use, where you go on vacation, how to react to that coworker, whether to serve on that church committee and the list goes on and on.
Teaching high school for 34 years has made me into a very goal-oriented person. I must always have a plan. However, this passage reminds me that I need to include God in these plans or they might not reach a successful conclusion.

Have you ever heard someone speak with passion? Maybe it was Billy Mays speaking about Oxyclean, or a coach giving a half-time speech, or maybe it was a preacher, speaking about Jesus Christ. It seems that when someone speaks with passion about something, people listen. I read the following story by G. Campbell Morgan and it reminded me of the importance of speaking with passion.
There is a tale told of that great English actor, Macready. An eminent preacher once said to him: "I wish you would explain to me something." "Well, what is it? I don't know that I can explain anything to a preacher."
"What is the reason for the difference between you and me? You are appearing before crowds night after night with fiction, and the crowds come wherever you go. I am preaching the essential and unchangeable truth, and I am not getting any crowd at all."
Macready's answer was this: "This is quite simple. I can tell you the difference between us. I present my fiction as though it were truth; you present your truth as though it were fiction."
Some things are easier to talk with passion about than others. I could talk about New York Giants football all day long and with passion, but it would be hard for me to talk about changing out an electrical outlet in the wall with passion. Let me ask you this: Is it hard for you to talk about Jesus with passion? If it is, examine your life with Christ and seek out ways to become closer to Christ so that your love and passion for Him is contagious, and so that others see your passion for Him.

I once heard a preacher ask a question after reading these verses. The question was: "What if the Lord, when inspiring these verses, changed the last phrase of Psalms to read instead of 'Let everything that has breath praise the Lord' to 'Let everything that praises the Lord have breath?'" Then he asked, "How many of you would be breathing?” So, I ask you...

I remember it quite vividly. I sat there in a movie theater in February of 2004. I had gone to see a movie about my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with several friends. I was in the top row of the stadium seats with my coca-cola and popcorn in hand anticipating a movie to help me understand and see what my Savior went through. I had no clue what was about to happen to me. I have no clue what happened to that bag of popcorn, because there was no need for it. I sat there for over 2 hours, speechless, with tears rolling down my cheeks the entire time. After the movie ended, I continued to sit there, still speechless. My brother and I rode to the movie together. We rode the entire way home speechless. I went straight to bed, but could not sleep. I laid there with the images in my head of Christ being beaten, and pieces of his flesh barely hanging on to him by skin. I couldn’t help but lay there and feel so guilty of the sin I had in my life. He did not deserve to go through what He went through. It was of no fault to Him whatsoever. It was my sin that held Him there. It was my sin that caused Him to go through that pain. I was the very reason His flesh was ripped from his body. I did it.
The name of the movie is: “The Passion of the Christ.” So, what is this passion the title describes? What passion would cause Christ to go through what He did? You would have to be passionate about something in order to go to the cross the way Jesus Christ did, right? So, what exactly is this passion the movie speaks about? That passion is me. That passion is you. Christ is passionate about His children. Wow! While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Prayer: Thank you Jesus for being passionate about me. Thank you for taking my place on the cross. Lord help me to be just as passionate about you, that I would lay my life down for you. Amen

“And I will be even more undignified than this” were the words of King David as his wife Michal tried to rebuke his actions when he danced before the Lord. These actions were taking place as the Arc of the Lord was brought into the city of David. These were bold statements made about a man that was passionate about his God.
Now I know we are Baptist and the thought of dancing before the Lord brings shivers up some of our spines. The thought of me dancing in any fashion scares me. However, I can just picture David in my mind getting almost giddy because of his knowledge that he was in the presence of the Lord. You see kids become giddy on Christmas morning, because they are so excited about the gifts they are about to receive. Jesus Christ’s gift of eternal life is a gift worth getting giddy over. My prayer is that our passion will increase for the Lord, and that we will even at times become giddy over the love we have for our Savior!

A lot of us have done it. We saw some great deal that was going to take place on a certain item on “Black Friday” and we got up really early and went to line up outside the store to get this “deal of our lifetime” on this great product. Unfortunately many times they would be sold-out of it, before we even got to the item! That is some dedication there.
Imagine a world where that kind of excitement and that kind of drive was found in our attendance to church. Imagine us getting there early, because we did not want to miss out on something. I believe that is what a passionate church looks like!

We Are Pleasant Valley!
We are Pleasant Valley! And we are made to WIN! No, we are not perfect, but we are, on purpose, desiring to be a church that WINS! God has been so good to us over the last few weeks! We have been learning to be more intentional as a church and are rallying together around some basic fundamentals of our Christian faith. God is using the Sunday School lessons, Daily Devotions, and Worship Services to challenge and encourage us to WIN Together. As a matter of fact God has been good to us for the last 101 years! And as we begin another year of ministry as a church, we must be a church on purpose more than any other time in our history. I am excited about what God has done, is doing, and will do as we rally together to WIN!
Here are some encouraging words from some of our people:
Steve Tucker commented, “It is amazing how God used so many different individuals to write about many different topics but yet maintain the same direction in all of them..."A Winning Church by becoming Winning Individuals.”
Rebecca Cox wrote, “I am SO excited about our children's choir! On our first Wednesday night meeting there were 24 children. At our second Wednesday night practice, there were 25!! There is nothing shabby about this group of kids - OUR kids - and we are going to have a children's choir that WINS!”
Will and Sharon Moore left a prayer on our blog: “We are thankful for fellow Christians that use their talents for your glory. We know the jewels are in the fields. Help us to be quick harvesters! A crown without jewels doesn't have much sparkle. Pleasant Valley wants their crowns to really, really shine! Help us to win for Jesus....In Christ's Holy name...Amen.”
Gail Williams wrote, “I feel a change going on in my own heart for GOD’S Glory. I am learning to listen more to the Holy Spirit, I am learning to apply truth in circumstances of life. I am working on purposeful and intentional participation, stepping out of my comfort zone!! I’m in the process of learning to be more prepared to be used for GOD’S purpose to increase God's Kingdom… I am excited to see what GOD is doing at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.”
Looks and sounds like a Winning Church to me!

There is a name given to the fans and students of Duke University. They are called the “Cameron Crazies”. They camp out for tickets, and paint themselves, and are even known for standing up for the entire basketball game. They are devoted followers of Duke Basketball. Really, you can’t blame them, because it seems that almost every year the Duke Basketball program is ranked very high in the rankings.
In no way am I saying we should paint ourselves, and go crazy for church every Sunday. However, if we would even show a little bit of this excitement and passion for the one that hung on the cross of Calvary, and died for our sins, so that we might have life, I believe we would be doing well. Let’s get passionate for our Savior.

Read Galatians 2:20

What are you passionate about? That’s a question we all ought to ponder. In order to really answer that question, we must ask ourselves a couple other questions. What do we think about when we awake in the morning, and what does our mind drift to when we are relaxing or have some down time. If we ask ourselves these two questions and answer them truthfully, we will often times find what we are passionate about. This can be quite revealing to ourselves, if we are honest. What did you come up with? Baseball? Football? Electronics? Music? Movies? TV shows? It’s not bad to enjoy any of these things individually. However, when we become passionate to a point that it fills out minds and hearts with these things, that’s when it becomes dangerous. The reason I use the word “dangerous” is because it can easily become an idol at that point. So, we have to be careful not to allow anything to be placed higher than Jesus Christ.
In Galatians 2:20 Paul says he is “crucified with Christ, it is no longer him who lives, but Christ who lives within him”. If we live with that mentality, then our life will be a life filled with the right things. Fill your life with Christ

I am my biggest problem. I had a lot of bad habits. They were hard to break. How did I get them? I didn’t just wake up one morning with them. It was a process that developed over time. So, it took time to break them. How did I do it? I have found that the best way is to develop good habits. It takes commitment to doing good things daily. It may be hard and awkward at first, but it will eventually become part of daily life. I found that when I began developing good habits, then bad habits were crowded out of my life.
Bad habits are driven by self. Good habits are driven by the Spirit. We must remove the bad habits and replace them with good habits if we want to win.

Read 1 Timothy 4:-16 and 2 Timothy 1:6

A few seasons back Jason was watching the Heisman Selection show on television. The Heisman Trophy is awarded for the most outstanding college football player. (That much I knew. I still remember all the press when Herschel Walker won back in the 80’s.)
As Jason was watching, I began to question him about certain aspects of the award. I learned that usually the award goes to players of certain key positions like quarterback or running back. That just didn’t seem right to me. My football knowledge may be limited but common sense tells me that it takes a team of gifted players to give those Heisman nominees a chance at winning the award. I did some research. Of all the winners listed not once has a safety, tackle, nose guard, tight end, kicker, place holder, long snapper, kick returner, punter, upback, gunner, wedge buster, or center been selected as the Heisman Trophy winner. Statistically, if a player wants the Heisman he better hope that he isn’t assigned the job of center. Yet, try to get the play off with a poor snap. I’d say a great center is very important. The center must practice to be the best he can be.
If you are a Christian you have been given gifts to equip you to work as a part of the body. Like the game of football, the body of Christ has many different positions. Some positions will be easily visible and even have a certain prominence about them. Yet, it takes the whole “team” working together to be victorious. Each position is important and may require specially designed practices.

In this scripture Paul urges the people of Corinth to be of one mind, thought, and purpose. Does this mean we should all be alike? No, that would be ultimately impossible. We are all different! We each have different gifts provided to us by God our Father. But as fellow Christians at PVBC we should be alike in our purpose, winning souls for Christ and glorifying God with praise, giving and worship.
Let us each look at ourselves and truly seek out the gifts we have been blessed with. Then let us look at others for their gifts. With this mixed group of blessings, let us then come together seeking to use All we have been given for the ultimate goal and purpose, Building up the Kingdom of God for His Glory.

Read Ephesians 1:13-19

Recently I was listening to the podcast of Family Life Today. The guests were a couple whose marriage seemed doomed from the beginning. The wife, Star Molegraaf, remembers sitting across from a marriage counselor who wanted to talk with her about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Star says, “He looked at me again real intently in the eye; and he said, ‘Do you believe that God took that dead man out of the grave, raised Him to life so that He could save you?’ I said, ‘Yes! I believe that.’ He said, ‘You think God can take a dead man—raise Him to life again to save you—but you don’t think that same God can heal your marriage?’ It was my moment.”
Although I may not face the same challenge, Star Molegraaf’s testimony reminds me that as a believer I have been given all I need to practice to win at whatever challenges I may face. The passage in Ephesians reminds me that I was given the equipment that will give me the ability to win. When I heard the Word of Truth (the Gospel) and believed, I was marked with the promised Holy Spirit. I can know the hope to which he has called me, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparable great power (the kind of power that can raise the dead).
We may call ourselves practicing but many times we are not giving our all. We aren’t even using all the equipment provided for us. No wonder we keep playing a mediocre game.

Are you practicing like a marked, empowered follower of Christ? Do you feel like practice is pointless because you’ve already lost so many games?

Is our local body content with mediocre practices? How can we encourage one another to give each practice our all?

Read 2 Timothy 2:1-5

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of a soldier? Do you envision a weak, frail or feeble person? Certainly not! As Paul encouraged Timothy to be strong in the grace of Jesus Christ and be a good soldier, his writings also reminds us that we are not members of a losing army. However, there are certain requirements that will test the ability of a good soldier. One such requirement involves enduring hardships.
Back in early 2009, many hardships came on our family. Kim and I lost a baby, Ben had been hospitalized for a short period of time, and someone was snooping around our home while we were there. These events occurred within a month-and-a-half period. Relying on my own strength and my personal ability to lead my family would have been a weak, frail and feeble decision. However, the captain of our salvation, the Lord Jesus Christ led us through these hardships, because we realized it was only through His ability and strength that we could battle.
If your initial response to the question in the first paragraph involved the picture of a man or woman in uniform with a strong physique, then you are not alone. God also desires us, His children to be strong spiritually (good soldiers of Jesus Christ). It is not our ability to fight that makes us a winner individually or collectively, but the aspiration we have to please Him who has chosen us to be a soldier. We cannot win in the fight in spiritual matters while being entangled or tripped up by the (temporal) hardships in this life. Look to Jesus Christ, who has chosen us to be a soldier – the One who gives grace to help in our time of need.

What sin(s) or busy work - or as the scripture would put it, what affairs of this life hinder your service as a soldier?

Verse 5 refers to our ability to win, but to do so by competing fairly. How do you think this is communicated to us as a body of believers (soldiers)?

Read Matthew 25:14-30 and I Corinthians 12:1-12

I asked a group of teens I was preparing to coach on the first day of practice, “Do you believe there are people who are just natural athletes?” They all answered yes. Then I asked them to tell me how naturals were different from others. Some of their comments were that naturals had gifted ability and were able to play better than others from the start.
I responded, “So you’re telling me they didn’t have to practice to have this ability. They were born with it?” They replied, yes! I then asked, “Do you know someone who is a natural that never had to practice to be the best?” They all looked at me and said no! To be the best even a natural would have to practice. Do you believe in natural talent? Whether it is physical, musical, mental, etc..? Does God give some of us more ability than others from birth?

After reading the passage, does God give each of us talents?
Does He give us all the same amount?
Can someone lose a talent, if so how?
Can someone gain more talents, if so how?
God does give natural talent or ability. He gives one or many. The clincher is you must use the talent or it will be taken away. Use equals practice! I don’t know about you, but I hate the thought of losing any talent that God has given me.

The blessings are deeper and wider than you can image. I challenge you to find out what God wants you to be doing in His church today! The key to getting started! As Hebrews 12: 1-2 says, “We must lay aside every weight, and sin which so easily ensnares us, and run with endurance the race that is set before us looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.”

In August of 1993, Bill and I moved to Hampton, Georgia and began jobs in the Atlanta area. We moved on a Saturday and I still remember how hard that day was. James and Teri Moody had bought our home here and since they were a part of the Young Married Couples Sunday School class we taught at Pleasant Valley, many from the Sunday School class came to help move us out and move them in. When the u-haul was finally loaded; they all lined up single file to hug us and send us on our way. I hugged family and friends and got in the car to follow Bill in the u-haul to Atlanta. I was at City Boulevard before I stopped crying! However God had a plan for us and that plan was for us to become integral members of Liberty Hill Baptist Church. We came to love those folks “almost” as much as we loved Pleasant Valley!
While we were at Liberty Hill, Pastor Jeff Gongwer preached a series of sermons on the guiding values of a church which I want to share with you. I think they are relevant for both Pleasant Valley and Liberty Hill.

GUIDING VALUES OF A CHURCH
- Worshipping Church – We affirm that God deserves worship and people need to worship. (Hebrews 13:15; I Peter 2:5)
- Evangelistic Church – We affirm the real need of every person is to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. (I Corinthians 15:1-4)
- Discipling Church – We affirm that growing toward godliness is the goal of our discipleship. (II Timothy 3:16-17)
- Fellowshipping Church – We affirm that we grow and minister best in the context of God’s love; therefore we will enjoy opportunities of wholesome Christian fellowship. (John 13:34-35)
- Ministering Church – We affirm that the New Testament model of ministry is a shared ministry; therefore each member will seek to discover and develop spiritual gifts and talents to minister in and through Christ’s body; the church. (Ephesians 4:11-13)
- Missions Church – We affirm that the mission of the church is global in its scope. (Acts 1:8)

The sun that hardens clay to brick
Can soften wax to shape and mold;
So too life’s trials will harden some,
While others purify as gold.
I am very passionate about saving the earth. My husband isn’t quite as passionate as I am, and thinks I’m eccentric when I bring my reused Styrofoam cup with me to Hog-n-Bonz on Saturday mornings. But I have a deep conviction to reduce, reuse, and recycle!
This made me think. No one has ever accused me of being eccentric about my faith. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were certainly eccentric about their faith. They stood firmly by their convictions to the point of death. Impressing the king did not cross their minds. They chose to be purified as gold!

Have you ever been ridiculed for your faith? Is that because you aren’t standing by your convictions? Do you come through your trials purified like gold?
Jesus said we are blessed if we “are persecuted for righteousness’ sake.” Let’s make it our goal to me persecuted. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? But who are we trying to impress, people or God? We must stand firm in our faith!!!

PVBC has been ridiculed numerous times throughout our community because of our mistakes, stubbornness, and self-serving attitudes. Let’s unite to become a winning church!! Let us be ridiculed because we are a people of conviction, unwavering, undivided, and unstoppable. We can be this and more through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Read Joshua 1:1-9, 3:7

God called Joshua to lead Israel into the Land of Promise. Moses had died, leaving Joshua to carry the responsibility of this enormous and dangerous task. God promised to be with him and make him successful. Certainly the fiery darts of doubt, fear, and uncertainty were hurled at Joshua by the enemy. That’s when Joshua raised his shield of faith, believed God, and moved ahead with confidence.
God-confidence comes easily when the way seems clear. But the enemy is full of wrath and never rests. When we move forward for God, we will run into obstacles. Let’s seek the Lord with all our hearts, souls, and minds so that we may live confidently the life He has in store for us.

We have all lived in God’s presence when we were in a right relationship with Him. In our heads we know He can be trusted. So why do our hearts quiver with a lack of confidence when He is saying, “Go. Be strong and courageous.”

The Israelites were ready to win! They placed their confidence in God and the man He had chosen to lead them. Will PVBC march forward in unity and confidence behind the man God has chosen to lead us? Are we really ready to win or will we continue to live in defeat and apathy?

Serving Jesus is like driving down a dirt road. When the road is smooth, it’s easy. But when the rains come and wash away the dirt, leaving bumps and washouts, it becomes difficult.
Through the trials of life our commitment wavers. We struggle with the sacrifices of service. In today’s passage there were three people that thought they wanted to follow Christ. Jesus realized they weren’t truly willing to put aside their own ideas, plans, and desires and embrace His.
Our commitment must be whole-hearted. There’s no place in the kingdom of God for half-heartedness. Jesus rejected these three people because they didn’t really believe the rewards would be worth the cost of commitment.

Do you think more about tangible or intangible things? Do your resources go toward building your kingdom or God’s kingdom? Where is your commitment?
Joyce Meyer wrote, “You can suffer the pain of change or suffer remaining the way you are." Are you ready to pay the cost to change? It is going to take whole-hearted commitment.

Jesus was committed to people. To what are we committed? Maintaining comfortable and beautiful buildings? Our financial statement? Or maybe we’re all about making sure things at PVBC run as we want them to?
It is extremely important that we stay committed to the word of God. But we can learn to be flexible in our approach.

Jesus was committed to people. To what are we committed? Maintaining comfortable and beautiful buildings? Our financial statement? Or maybe we’re all about making sure things at PVBC run as we want them to?
It is extremely important that we stay committed to the word of God. But we can learn to be flexible in our approach.

With great excitement, we have scheduled another Tailgate Party for Sunday, October 31st at 4PM. Begin planning right now and invite your friends, family and neighbors out for a great time of food and fun to celebrate our winning church. To raise the excitement we will be having judges to determine the best "Tailgate Experience" by rating food, set-up, and fun for each area. It is going to be a blast!

Read Hebrews 11

Visiting the Pentagon in the 1990s with my Army veteran father was a wonderful experience. We walked the corridors looking at artwork portraying war heroes, reading about decisive battles, and reliving American history.
When I read Hebrews 11, I visualize a similar scene – a painting of Noah preaching before the ark; a statuette of Abraham and Sara traveling to Canaan; plaques honoring Joshua’s campaigns to conquer the Promised Land . . . get the idea? These ordinary people chose to step out in faith and obey God. Toward the end of the chapter we meet nameless people that gave all they had, including their lives. They never saw the promises of God fulfilled in their earthly life, but they believed and held on till the end. In the eyes of God they were true winners!

If you were dancing with God, who would be leading?
Faith is not something we manufacture ourselves. Romans 10:17 tells us that faith comes from hearing the word of God. Commit to filling your mind with God’s word through Christian radio*, music, books, preaching, websites, prayer and reading the bible. Note: You may have to turn off your TV.

God isn’t asking PVBC to jump the staircase of faith; He wants us to take one step at a time. Will we obediently bond together, taking each step as a body?

Read Matthew 25:32-46 and Ezekiel 3:17-21

In high school basketball, I enjoyed playing zone defense. Any player failing to defend their position around the goal was accountable to the coach. Likewise, God has assigned each of us a “position” for which we are accountable because He has given us everything needed to do the job.
Note in verse 36 of the first passage that Jesus said, “men . . . shall give account . . .” He did not say “unrighteous men” or “righteous men”; therefore, we can assume He is speaking of all men (women included).
In the second passage God held the prophet Ezekiel accountable for sharing His Word with the sinful and displaced nation of Israel. Centuries later, Jesus’ last words hold all believers accountable for sharing His Word with all nations. Our attitude should be, “As long as I am in this world, I will speak of God’s love and grace. I will reach out to those in need and I will go to whomever He sends me.”

Do you take seriously your accountability to God?
Do you strive to please Him in your words and actions?
Do you use the resources with which He has blessed you to please Him?
Are you sharing Jesus with the people you encounter?

God will hold us accountable for our sins of commission as well as our sins of omission. Just as God’s prophets were the watchmen over the nation of Israel, God instituted the church to be the watchman of a lost world. Are we so concerned with traditions, possessions, pleasing others, and satisfying ourselves that we fail God?

I have an only child, so I always made sure she got to be around other children. Through playing she learned sharing, fairness, kindness, manners, and so much more. For proper social development, all children need to play and the playground is a great classroom.
Christians also need to “play”, so God has provided a great “playground” - the local church! Is there a better way to grow as a follower of Christ than to be surrounded by God’s word and God’s people? At church we should find instruction, encouragement, discipleship, strong bonds with other believers, and so much more.

We have been commanded by the Word of God to meet together. Are you being obedient in this area?
There are so many things that can keep you from attending church. I challenge you to make a list. Place it before God while you bow before Him. Ask Him to break your heart if there’s anything on your list that will be burned like hay and stubble when you stand before Him. (1 Cor. 3:11-13)

When a small boat landed on the shores of Gennesaret, a few heads probably turned. But when Jesus stepped out of that boat people began running this way and that, bringing their sick, and begging for a touch. Their lives were about to be transformed.
The people of Gennesaret had a winning attitude that led to changed lives. All the activity of their busy schedules came to a halt. They made time for Jesus. He was all that mattered at the moment of time. What a great attitude to have!

You have this same opportunity every day of your life! Every day is another chance to come into the presence of the Savior! What are you doing with these opportunities?
Our attitude toward Jesus is revealed by the quality and quantity of our quiet time. Will you make time to be with Jesus today?
Attitude is a choice. Quiet time is a choice. Jesus chose to have a quiet time. What will you choose today?

“Ok kids, it’s time to go out and play!”
“Play ball!”
“She will be performing in a play next Thursday evening.”
The word “play” can be used in different ways, meaning different things. But, one thing about playing is it will always involve some kind of activity, it will require energy, motivation, and discipline.
As a senior in high school I was given an opportunity to switch from playing second base in softball to shortstop. In my mind, shortstop was the ultimate achievement. During practice that day I found myself making as many errors as I was clean catches. The coach pulled me to the side and told me that she thought maybe it was too much for me and she would be putting me back on second base. With tears running down my face I agreed. I was so disappointed! Out I went to play second once again and the coach hit me 10 ground balls, one after the other. Do you know how many I missed? None! Now why couldn’t I do that at shortstop? I don’t know. But, for some reason I could play well at second base, and that would enable our team the best opportunity to winning some ball games.
Where has God called you to play? Are you struggling in the place you are at? Are you trying with all your might to do something in your own strength that God has not asked you to do? Do you find yourself in a place not suited for you, and because of pride, like in my case, you choose to stay?
Or, are you playing anywhere? At home, church, the workplace? Are we intentionally playing for God’s team? Are we purposefully playing for the advancement of the Kingdom? As I read the verse above I found it interesting the verses prior to that verse spoke to wives, husbands, children, and bondservants. That covers all of us. We must play in these areas to win if we are to win people to Christ. Let’s play to win with all of our heart, as unto the Lord!

People to WIN! -- Be a Champion for Christ!

Read 1 Peter 2

Read that passage several times and you will see that we believers have got it going on… not because of “who” we are, but because of Who He is! He has made us a special people! What does it take to be a
Champion for Christ?
A Champion for Christ is a Christian with a Heart for others that is Anointed and Motivated by God to be Passionate about Life displaying Integrity in all situations while Overcoming adversity to be the person Needed in the world today.
C - Christian. Simply, a Christian is a Champion.
H - a Heart for others. So much of the Christian life is about others. You are to be a contributor to helping others win. Do not sit on the bench or in the bleachers any longer, get into the game and give your heart for
others!
A - Anointed. In other words, God’s Spirit is upon them. God is working in them, God is working on them, and God is working through them.
M - Motivated by God. A Champion is motivated to win in. They have an aim, an endeavor. A Champion strives to win, a Champion wants to win. Paul’s motivation was that He might win Christ.
P - Passionate about Life. This Life, the Christian Life is the only Life and it is worth living. May God set us on fire!
I - Integrity. Integrity is honesty, truth, honor, reliability. Integrity is the best friend your friends will ever have.
O - Overcoming. Yes, and all those who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. (2 Tim. 3:12) To win there will have been times where you have had to prevail, rise above, and conquer any
challenges.
N - Needed. We need CHAMPIONS! Be a CHAMPION today!
