Pray to WIN! -- A Prayer for Assurance

Read Philippians 4: 6 – 7
By Sam and Sue Stack

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

What a truth is found in the words of this old hymn based on the above scripture. How often do we try to do things on our own? God is waiting for us to realize that we cannot bear our burdens alone. God is waiting for us to admit the obvious to Him: that we cannot live our lives apart from Him. Life is so much easier when we take everything to Him.

This hymn was written by Joseph Scriven, who lived his life depending on Jesus as his only friend. Scriven lived a life filled with tragedy. The night before he was to be married, his fiancé was killed in an accidental drowning.

This hymn was not written to be published, it was written to encourage his mother who was critically ill in another country. He wrote it to encourage her and remind her that Jesus was there to bear her burdens. I pray that we all win with this truth.

Applying Truth as a Individual
Do you carry everything to God in prayer? Do you let His peace carry you through the day? Worry is a form of pride; do you allow pride to rob you of the peace of giving God control?

Applying the Truth as a Church
Do we as a church allow God control or do we try to do everything our way? Are you willing to pray to allow God to work through leadership to make Pleasant Valley a Church that Wins?
